The server backup should be scheduled to run every night, backing up data
from your server hard drive onto discs or tapes. It is recommended that you
use five discs, labeled Monday to Friday, for the daily backup. Each morning,
remove the previous day's disc and replace it with the current day's disc.
These discs should not be stored on the company premises otherwise the
catastrophe hitting your company can also hit your backup. Taking the
backup discs home, preferably keeping them in a lockable cabinet or safe is
much more reliable....any place is better than next to the server where Power-Gx is running!
You should check that the server backup has worked successfully overnight
by checking the backup log. Refer to your own backup software manual or
hardware engineer for instructions on this. If your daily server backup has
failed it is vital that you report this promptly to your hardware maintenance
engineer, or contact Calidore if you have a hardware maintenance contract.
It is also recommended you spot-check your backup discs occasionally by
restoring a backup to a test company in a temporary folder and checking the
data. Do not economise on your backup disks, use disks of a reliable brand
and use new disks for each year. The consequences could be disastrous if
one of your backup discs turns out to be damaged or corrupt.
